At Back to La Tierra we work with volunteers who are registered with HelpX. Helpx is an online listing of host organic farms, non-organic farms, farmstays, homestays, ranches, lodges, B&Bs, backpackers hostels and even sailing boats who invite volunteer helpers to stay with them short-term in exchange for food and accommodation.
HelpX is intended primarily as a cultural exchange for working holiday makers who would like the opportunity during their travels abroad, to stay with local people and gain practical experience or in our case permaculture knowledge. In the typical arrangement, the helper works an average of 4 hours per day and receives free accommodation and meals for their efforts. At the moment we have a Czech couple, Zuzka and Ondra staying in our guest apartment. Although we have dinner together now and then, they have a small kitchen, so are free and able to prepare their own meals. I just went shopping for all of us and brought them a basket of fruit and vegetables. They are vegan and really happy with all the fresh food and the grapes that they can pick from our terrace. We really enjoy meeting these young people who are all so wise and committed to making a difference.
